Video of Ron Paul (aka the Man!)

    http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6810377229300638640&q=ron+paul&hl=en

Here is a video of Congressman Ron Paul (R-TX) talking about the patriot act and various other things. For those of you who may not know, Ron Paul is, in my opinion, the best member of Congress.

Here is a link to his Congressional website: http://www.house.gov/paul/

Congressman Paul is the only libertarian Republican in the House, or the entire Congress for that matter.

smoothing out business cycles, no depressions, long term prosperity.  Go for fiat!!!!!!!!!!  The main reason for the gold standard is to control long term inflation but as delong points out its bad logic "if you do not trust a central bank to keep inflation low, why should you trust it to remain on the gold standard for generations?"

Re: Video of Ron Paul (aka the Man!)

What if you don't trust a central bank at all?

A gold standard also helps keep the balance of payments between countries in equilibrium. It wasn't the gold standard that failed; it was government. The central bank - aka the Federal Reserve - and its  various stages of loose and tight monetary policies is the cause of recession/depression.

Read Barry J. Eichengreen, Golden Fetters.  It tells of how the gold standard helped lead to the depression and how countires that abanoned the gold standard were able to escape the great depression or suffer less from it.

Okay. Likewise, I would ask that you read What Has Government Done to Our Money? by Murray Rothbard, along with his book about the causes of the great depression, Americas Great Depression.

Gold doesn't have any 'real' value either.

    Try again.

To the contrary, individuals value gold, thus deriving it's value. It's a basic economic object that gets its value through personal utility and perceived scarcity. As the old joke goes, government is the only institution that can take a perfectly good piece of paper, print some ink on it, and make it totally worthless.

In other words, its value is based on exactly the same principles as fiat money.

Re: Video of Ron Paul (aka the Man!)

    LOL.

No. There is no real value for fiat money outside of a medium of exchange. Gold is grounded in the value it had before it was used as a medium of exchange. Fiat money has no pre-existing price upon which to ground demand. Money with real value has demand for its actual commodity use, or direct use, built on top of its use/demand as a medium of exchange. Real money, simply, is a commodity.
